Our Project
Linguistic Dynamics Science 3 (LingDy3)
Linguistic Dynamics Science 3 (LingDy3; 2016.04ー2022.03) aims to advance a range of research activities in support of building multicultural and multilingual societies with a special focus on Asian and African regions. Through active collaboration with both academic research institutions and minority language communities, the project aspires to build mutually beneficial relationships between them, such as developing interests and capacity in language documentation and revitalization within language communities that can positively impact not only the communities themselves but also academic research activities. The project activities include the following:
-
Collaborative Research on Language Documentation and Conservation
In order to understand the current situations of minority languages in the world through fieldwork, we develop joint research projects for language documentation in collaboration with language communities and researchers. We also seek to exploit the documented language materials for linguistic research.
-
Training on Language Documentation and Revitalization for Junior Scholars and Language Community Members
We offer training programs in collaboration with institutions inside and outside Japan and language communities. The programs are meant for not only junior scholars but also speakers working on the documentation of their languages within their language communities.
-
Development of Supporting Software Tools and Environment
In recent years, we have witnessed a remarkable development of tools for language documentation. We are developing more effective standards and tools for supporting documentation activities.
-
Building Collaborative Network to Facilitate Effective Accumulation and Utilization of Linguistic Resources
In collaboration with institutions in Asia and Africa, we are constructing a research hub that connects archives in the world to provide further possibilities for exploiting language materials archived as language resources by researchers and research institutions.
-
Outreach Activities for Minority Language Communities
We are developing multimedia resources for language revitalization in collaboration with language communities to be applied in language education.
-
Development and Dissemination of a Model of Collaborative Language Documentation Research
To meet the needs of the community, we provide language communities with techniques of language documentation in order to enable these language communities to be involved in language documentation and preservation. Furthermore, we publish our research outcomes and commit ourselves to outreach projects for the public to present information on current situations of a multilingual society.
