“Methods for the study of mixed cultures”
This talk discusses challenges that arise when documenting communities whose language originates from a prolonged situation of language contact. These include the repertoire of languages available in the community, the nature of variation in language use, as well as issues of prestige that can affect the way in which language is perceived. Understanding these matters is important for researchers to identify how to approach descriptive tasks as well as how to interpret existing theories of mixed languages and their origins.
