Endangered Scripts of Island Southeast Asia

Aims

This workshop will discuss the writing systems and traditions of island Southeast Asia, focusing on (but not limited to) the endangered Indic scripts of the Philippines, Sumatra and Sulawesi. Papers are invited covering topics such as historical and structural relationships, literature, documentation, revival, modern functions, adaptations and social/cultural meaning. In addition to the academic component of the workshop, the organisers encourage participation by culture-bearers, activists and artists.

Participants will be given maximum of 40 minutes for their presentation followed by 10 minutes question and answer.

Activities

Film Showing

A film on the Surat Inaborlan of Palawan Island will be shown on the second night of the workshop as part of the presentation of Kanakan Balintagos (Auraeus Solito), an internationally acclaimed Filipino film maker and a member of the Palawán ethnic group of the island of Palawan in the Philippines.

Exhibition

As the core of the workshop revolves around the vitality of the various scripts of Island Southeast Asia, a small space has been dedicated for script exhibition during the activity. Participants are encouraged to contribute samples of documents and artworks from past and present for other participants to examine. Those who wish to participate in the exhibition must inform the coordinators ahead of schedule as to the nature and dimension of the materials that they wish to exhibit.
